2000 Mercury Cougar Brake Shoe Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair brake shoes on 2000 Mercury Cougar?
A: You should start brake shoe servicing and repair work by using a wrench to loosen the wheel nuts then supporting the vehicle securely using a jack. Take off the brake drum only after you release the brake shoe automatic adjuster and remove the wheel. First detach the retainers when installed then align the hub flange properly. After removing hold down springs you must detach the parking brake cable by extending the secondary shoe while disconnecting it from the cable. Release the shoes from the anchor block then take out the bottom return spring. It is essential to approach this task with caution to protect the wheel cylinder boots during shoe-wheel cylinder separation. Secure the wheel cylinder pistons with a rubber band before untightening the upper return spring along with the primary shoe through clockwise adjuster rotation. The secondary shoe should be detached from the strut support because the strut support spring maintains tension during this process and the return spring of the parking brake must be removed. During installation the new shoes need to be arranged in axle pairs. New installments require clean and checked backing plate contact points with the application of Silicon Dielectric Compound D742-18A331-A or equivalent material following Ford specification ESA-M1C171 -A. The parking brake return spring should be set first followed by the secondary shoe installation to the strut and brake shoe adjuster while rotating the adjuster completely clockwise. Position the shoes against the wheel cylinder together with the anchor block while removing rubber bands from wheel cylinder pistons and install upper and lower return springs accordingly. After the installation of the hold down springs you must lever the secondary shoe outwards in order to attach the parking brake cable. After installation of the drum and its retainers you should move onto the wheel while operating the brake pedal to let the automatic adjustment take place.
