2001 Ford Excursion Wheel Bearing Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the front wheel bearing and hub on 2001 Ford Excursion?
A: Begin servicing the front wheel hub and bearing on F-250 through Excursion vehicles by raising the vehicle and supporting its frame while removing front wheels and tires. The front disc brake caliper must be detached before removing the rotor where the caliper will rest out of position. Begin by removing the hub cap and afterward remove the cotter pin together with the adjusting nut and flatwasher. Check the spindle and nut threads before removal to confirm their ability for low-resistance rotation upon final assembly. Then extract the outer bearing cone assembly and roller components to pull out the hub assembly from the spindle. The necessary tool combination of slide hammer alongside bearing seal remover helps extract the inner bearing cone and bearing seal without harming the bearing cage. Before putting them in check that all lubricant is wiped off from the hub and spindle and check for suspicious wear patterns by inspecting the spindle end and bearing cups. Both components must be swapped out if damaged because users should replace bearing cups as pairs. Use a bearing cup driver tool to install the inner and outer bearing cups into the hub but ensure the hub seat maintains 0.38-mm (0.0015-inch) clearance by avoiding the fit of a 0.38-mm (0.0015-inch) feeler gauge between the cup and seat. Smooth the spindle shoulder along with the seal bore using emery cloth before starting. Add about 75 milliliters of lithium-based wheel bearing grease like Motorcraft Premium Long-Life Grease XG-1-C or -K into the hub space until the grease reaches equal height with the inner bearing cup diameters. You should apply grease to both bearing cone and roller assemblies through the use of a bearing packer when available although manual operation of the lubricant between rollers and cages serves as a substitute method if a packer is not present. Fix the hub at spindle center while installing the inner bearing cone and roller assembly into the inner cup and wheel bearing hub seal with a seal replacer until it stands fully lubricated. Start by placing the hub assembly before you install the outer bearing cone and roller assembly and flatwasher and adjusting nut and finish by securement with a new cotter pin. The end step requires reattachment of the hub cap followed by installation of the front disc brake caliper and rotor and front wheel and tire assemblies and vehicle lowering.
