2001 Ford Expedition Timing Cover Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the timing cover on 2001 Ford Expedition?
A: The timing cover service process begins by discharging the battery ground cable then removing each valve cover followed by the radiator as well as the water pump. The power steering pump must be set aside by removing the top and lower bolts to raise and support the vehicle. Service the timing cover by disconnecting the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor electrical connector followed by engine oil drain through the plug removal and extraction of front bolts and crankshaft front seal. Disconnect the vehicle from its supports then take out the camshaft position (CMP) sensor electrical connector. Begin by removing the bolt then proceeding to uninstall the belt idler pulley before finishing with the bolts. A plastic scraper tool should be used to clean all sealing areas but avoid using metal tools as they might create damaging scratches which lead to leaks. You should remove the engine front cover with its gasket while cleaning both mating surfaces. The installation process requires engine front cover gaskets to be properly placed first and silicone gasket and sealant should be applied to the cylinder head and cylinder block surface as well as the oil pan to cylinder block surface. The engine front cover needs installation with its gasket in place on the dowel before bolting it loosely. Follow the described sequence to tighten Romeo engine (4.6L) fasteners up to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.). Fasteners 1 through 5 of the Windsor engine (5.4L) should be torqued to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.) during the first phase while fasteners 6 and 7 require 48 Nm (35 ft. lbs.) in the second phase and all fasteners 8 through 15 need 48 Nm (35 ft. lbs.) in the final stage. After positioning the belt idler pulley you must install the bolt after which you should connect the CMP electrical connector. Reposition the vehicle then install new crankshaft front oil seal before loosely bolt installation followed by two-tightening phases reaching 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.) then an additional 60 degrees. The technician must combine the CKP sensor electrical connector before placing the power steering pump into position and tightening all bolts. To finish these modifications the operator should replace the drain plug and lower the vehicle and return the valve covers to their correct position. Add clean engine oil to the cavity and put in the water pump followed by the radiator before grounding the battery.
