2001 Ford Explorer Parking Brake Cable Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the rear parking brake cable and conduit on 2001 Ford Explorer?
A: A proper method to service and repair the parking brake cable and conduit requires fully releasing the parking brake control along with tension relief of the parking brake system. Direct the front parking brake cable and conduit before placing a 4 mm (5/32 inch) drill bit or its equivalent retainer. The air suspension switch at the rear jack storage area needs to be turned off before any vehicle lift or towing operation takes place because it prevents sudden changes in air spring pressure or volume. Rise the vehicle to a height while supporting it and unfasten the wheel assembly from the tire. Discard the parking brake intermediate cable from two locations: first disconnect it from the locating hole end of the connector and then disconnect it from the LH parking brake rear cable and conduit. The parking brake rear cables of LH and RH must be separated at the parking brake cable equalizer before extracting the RH parking brake rear cable from its bracket through parking brake cable clip compression. The following steps involve disconnected of the RH parking brake rear cable and conduit from clip to LH parking brake rear cable and conduit and from rear parking brake cable retainer and RH hydraulic brake line clip. Detach the parking brake cable retainer clip by first removing the retainer clip bolt and subsequent removal of the retainer clip itself. Release the parking brake rear cable along with conduit by unclipping them from the brake line clip located at the rear axle housing top. After compressing the retainer you can release the cable from the anchor plate of the rear disc brake caliper before unclipping it from the parking brake lever. Before final installation users must connect the parking brake rear cable and conduit to the brake lever then to the anchor plate of the rear disc brake caliper. The cable installation process begins with placing the brake line clip on top of the rear axle housing where the cable will be attached and then putting in the retainer clip bolt after position the retainer clip. The RH parking brake rear cable and conduit needs to be installed on the RH hydraulic brake line clip to join the rear parking brake cable retainer then link it to the LH parking brake rear cable and conduit clip. Check for proper seating of the parking brake cable bracket before connecting the RH parking brake rear cable and conduit to it and the LH parking brake rear cable and conduit at the parking brake cable equalizer. Connect the parking brake intermediate cable to the LH parking brake rear cable and conduit and reenable the air suspension system if present before installing the front wheels with tires and tightening the parking brake tension by pulling front cable and conduit and then removing the retainer.
