2001 Ford Explorer Sport Shift Interlock Solenoid Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Shift Interlock Solenoid on 2001 Ford Explorer Sport?
A: The first requirement to work on Brake Shift Interlock Actuator maintenance is to eliminate back up power supply to stop unintended air bag activation. Terminate the battery ground cable then wait for at least one minute before disconnecting any auxiliary batteries and power supplies that exist on the vehicle. Start by taking out all screws from the lower steering column opening finish panel and moving the hood release handle to expose it. Start by removing two screws from the finish panel before you prop off the retaining clips by pulling forward and taking out the panel. Successively remove the five bolts fastening the lower steering column opening finish panel reinforcement until the steering column can be lowered. Afterward remove the four nuts from the steering column. One should remove the electrical connector while extracting the shift lock actuator and insert plate from the steering column by unfastening the three bolts. The installation process does not require the shift lock actuator clip which should be thrown away. The completion of this procedure requires you to execute the opposite order of steps that were used for removal.
