- Q: How Can You Safely Depower and Repower the Air Bag Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) on 2001 Ford F-150?A: Safety glasses must be worn at all times when dealing with air bag modules because the SRS depowering procedure helps reduce accidental deployment risks during operation. Probing the connectors on the air bag module creates a high risk of personal injury together with air bag deployment. Before performing any seat service which includes a side air bag and safety belt pretensioner, verify that the SRS is properly depowered. The air bag warning lamp will turn on when the RCM fuse F22 (10A) is taken out while the ignition is in ON position but this is only a normal condition that does not represent a fault. The first step should be to disconnect both vehicle power and accessories and the ignition. Remove the cover from the central junction box (CJB) placed below the left side of the instrument panel before taking out the RCM fuse F22. In order to check the air bag indicator properly with the ON ignition position you must watch the indicator burn continuously for thirty seconds. First disconnect the battery ground cable (14301) and wait at least one minute for back up power depleting including the disconnection of auxiliary batteries. When performing a vehicle repower ensure you have removed all diagnostic tools which check the restraint system and have connected every component of the SRS. Begin by turning the ignition to ON while doing RCM fuse F22 return into the CJB before sealing the cover with the CJB. You must connect the battery ground cable only after checking that the vehicle compartment remains empty and free from any obstruction that could harm the air bag modules. The SRS verification process requires users to turn the ignition key between OFF and ON positions followed by waiting for 10 seconds before returning to ON. After the ignition turns on the air bag indicator maintains its steady illumination for six seconds before its extinction. Although functioning correctly the indicator should light continuously for six seconds but the occurrence of faults may result in the absence of the indicator light while it remains lit or flashes simultaneously with possible chimes. The diagnosis and repair of any SRS faults is necessary while using a scan tool to clear all continuous DTCs from the restraints control module.
