2001 Ford F-150 Ignition Lock Cylinder Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Remove and Install a Non-Functional Ignition Lock Cylinder on 2001 Ford F-150?
A: You must first straighten the front wheels before disconnecting the battery cable and leaving it off for one minute during non-functional steering column lock cylinder service. The supplemental restraint system (SRS) needs to be deactivated to prevent dangerous injuries. The first step is removing the steering wheel assembly before removing the ignition switch cylinder cap. The lock cylinder requires replacement with the lock repair package (F85Z-11582-AA) for building a new cylinder using the current key code of the vehicle. Perform the ignition switch lock cylinder removal by drilling a 1/8-inch diameter hole through the lock cylinder retaining pin followed by drilling a 3/8-inch hole through the ignition lock key slot until the lock cylinder pops out. Remove the outdated ignition switch lock cylinder from the column and eliminate all remnants of drilling material in the steering column. The next step requires removal of the bearing retainer along with the bearing and gear while performing a complete check for damage to the steering column. Clean every drill shaving completely from the column area. The installation process follows the opposite order of removal while you add a new ignition switch lock cylinder which needs to be tested for proper functioning. Using the instructions finish the process by turning on the supplemental restraint system (SRS).
