2001 Ford Mustang Ignition Lock Cylinder Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to Remove and Install a Non-Functional Ignition Lock Cylinder on 2001 Ford Mustang?
A: Before servicing a nonfunctional steering column lock cylinder you should position the front wheels straight ahead while disconnecting the battery ground cable followed by a one-minute allowance for depletion of the restraint system back up power supply to occur. Performing Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) deactivation is crucial to prevent serious personal injuries. Following the removal of the steering wheel assembly you must twist off the cap covering the ignition switch cylinder before proceeding to discard the defective lock cylinder and completing the lock repair based on instructions provided in the package to create a new cylinder that matches the current key code of the vehicle. A 1/8-inch diameter drill bit will remove the lock cylinder retaining pin followed by drilling the key slot center with a 3/8-inch drill bit until the ignition switch lock cylinder becomes loose. Discard and clean the ignition switch lock cylinder properly while removing it and cleaning every drill shaving from the steering column before removing the bearing retainer, bearing and gear. Perform a thorough cleaning then inspect the steering column for damage. The reinstallation requires putting back the new ignition switch lock cylinder followed by testing its functionality. The completion of the procedure requires turning on the Supplemental Restraint System.
