2001 Lincoln Continental Ignition Coil Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the ignition coils on 2001 Lincoln Continental?
A: Service and repair of ignition coils should begin with disconnecting the battery ground cable. First remove the right-hand spark plug cover by uninstalling its bolts then pulling off the lid. The service requires removal of RH ignition coils following the disconnection of their connectors and coil extraction from spark plugs. The procedure should be repeated for both ignition coils attached to the left-hand spark plug cover. The inspection seeks to identify cracks and carbon tracking and dirt on the ignition coils. The installation process begins by cleaning the "T" joints made by spark plug cover with wiring harness grommet and cam cover on both sides of the engine. Reinstall the LH ignition coils to the spark plugs while connecting the electrical connectors and applying silicone brake caliper grease and dielectric compound inside the ignition coil boots. The wiring harness grommet needs to be placed in the cam cover groove before applying a 3 mm (0.12 in) diameter by 10 mm (0.4 in) long bead of silicone sealer onto both "T" joint surfaces where the wiring harness grommet meets the cam cover and spark plug cover. Fasten down the LH spark plug cover using its bolts. Reinstall the RH ignition coils by applying identical grease and compound on their coils while installing the wiring harness grommet followed by silicone sealing of the "T" joints. The execution of the procedure ends with the RH spark plug cover bolt installation and the reconnection of the battery ground cable.
