- Q: How to service and repair the lower control arm on 2001 Lincoln Town Car?A: Start repairing or servicing the lower control arm by taking away front disc brake components which include pads together with caliper and anchor plate along with rotor as well as rotor shield. All vehicles have gas-pressurized front shock absorbers that extend automatically without assistance so avoid using heat or fire to the shock absorber tube. The first step is to detach the front shock absorber with two bolts that secure it to the lower suspension arm so you can lower the vehicle and remove the absorber by unthreading the nut followed by its retainer along with the grommet. Use the threaded rod to pass through the support plates before applying the upper ball between coils and level it with the threaded rod's cross hole using the pin for securement. Apply the top support plate until it touches the top of the spring and set the lower ball inside its cavity on the support plate. The thrust bearing and barrel nut get installed onto the threaded rod while you use a 1/2-inch wrench to support it with the rod in place while using a 1-1/4-inch wrench to squeeze the spring until rotating motion starts. First detach the ball joint retaining nut after which you should separate the lower suspension arm from the steering knuckle before you dispose of the retaining nut. Users should loosen the lower suspension arm pivot bolts together with nuts while lowering the arm to remove the coil spring using the compressor tool.
