2001 Lincoln Town Car Control Arm Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the lower control arm on 2001 Lincoln Town Car?
A: Start repairing or servicing the lower control arm by taking away front disc brake components which include pads together with caliper and anchor plate along with rotor as well as rotor shield. All vehicles have gas-pressurized front shock absorbers that extend automatically without assistance so avoid using heat or fire to the shock absorber tube. The first step is to detach the front shock absorber with two bolts that secure it to the lower suspension arm so you can lower the vehicle and remove the absorber by unthreading the nut followed by its retainer along with the grommet. A replacement should be made for the front suspension bumper on the lower suspension arm during an inspection process. The retaining nut on the lower ball joint needs torquing down before the ball joint can be separated from the front wheel spindle. Read all instructions from your spring compressor manufacturer before starting work because the compressed spring carries high tension that can harm you. Follow the instructions for Coil Spring Compressor D78P-5310-A or an equivalent to position the first support plate at mid-spring height with the ball cavity facing up and place the second support plate as low as possible while maintaining ball cavity down orientation. Use the threaded rod to pass through the support plates before applying the upper ball between coils and level it with the threaded rod's cross hole using the pin for securement. Apply the top support plate until it touches the top of the spring and set the lower ball inside its cavity on the support plate. The thrust bearing and barrel nut get installed onto the threaded rod while you use a 1/2-inch wrench to support it with the rod in place while using a 1-1/4-inch wrench to squeeze the spring until rotating motion starts. First detach the ball joint retaining nut after which you should separate the lower suspension arm from the steering knuckle before you dispose of the retaining nut. Users should loosen the lower suspension arm pivot bolts together with nuts while lowering the arm to remove the coil spring using the compressor tool. You should begin by removing the lower suspension arm pivot bolts and nuts then dislodging the arm from the frame crossmember before taking out the complete suspension component. Insert the lower suspension arm into its corresponding frame brackets before lightly installing the bolts along with the nuts. Put the coil spring with compressor inside the lower suspension arm then lift the arm while tightening a fresh ball joint retaining nut to 174 Nm (128 ft. lbs.). Lay the lower coil spring pigtail inside the front spring insulator of the front lower suspension arm before taking out the coil spring compressor. Put the front suspension bumper into place then fasten its retaining nut to 40 Nm torque value (30 ft. lbs.). Place the front shock absorber within the front coil spring before fixing its retention bolts which need 15 Nm (11 ft. lbs.) torque tightening. You should first lower the vehicle before installing a grommet along with a washer and nut onto the front shock absorber top stud. Tighten the retaining nut to 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.). Lift the vehicle once more to reinstall all front disc brake elements starting with brakes pads and continuing to the caliper, anchor plate, rotor and rotor shield then the wheel assembly. Using the proper tire height position sink the vehicle down and use torque wrenches to apply 174 Nm (128 ft lbs) tension to apparent front suspension arm-to-crossmember fasteners. Finish the work by checking and readjusting caster together with camber and toe settings if required.
