2002 Ford E-150 Econoline Drive Shaft Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Rear One-Piece Drive Shaft on 2002 Ford E-150 Econoline?
A: Starting driveway and flange assembly service requires a support system for the vehicle while being elevated. Index-marking the driveshaft flange yoke alongside the pinion flange will maintain driveline balance and stopping the output shaft from turning through index-marking the transmission tail shaft with the driveshaft yoke. Use a suitable tool to pry only in the designated area between the driveshaft yoke and flange rather than hammering on their components while removing the four bolts which allows disconnecting the yoke from the flange. Lower the driveshaft after disconnection then remove it from the output shaft. A thorough inspection of the extension housing seal is essential so you should replace it if any damage is detected. 4R70W transmission models will show a paint mark on both the driveshaft front and the transmission output shaft end while 4R100 transmission models lack this indicator in E150 and E250 vehicles and E350 and E450 vehicles respectively. The slip-yoke spline needs lubrication using Premium Long-Life Grease XG-1-C or -K or an equivalent product that matches Ford specification ESA-M1C75-B. Drive assembly depends on paint marks availability for installation. The installation requires new bolts yet Threadlock and Sealer EOAZ-19554-AA or equivalent WSK-M2G351-A5 to the bolts should be used if new ones are not available. A uniform cross-tightening process using a cross pattern should be performed while the bolts are installed. This allows the driveshaft flange yoke to settle properly onto the pinion flange.
