2002 Ford Explorer Transmission Pan Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Transmission Pan on 2002 Ford Explorer?
A: Begin repair and servicing of the fluid pan by supporting the vehicle and placing a drain pan below the transmission fluid pan. The drain plug must be removed to drain out the fluid. The transmission fluid pan gasket can be reused after cleaning because it passed an inspection for damage. The next step involves uninstalling the 16 screws connecting to the transmission fluid pan before detaching the pan along with its gasket. Remove the transmission fluid filter before cleaning up and inspecting the transmission fluid pan and its magnet. In models equipped with the feature you should remove both the converter housing access plug and the converter drain plug to drain out the fluid. A new converter drain plug is required for installation to avoid leakage while the old drain plug and converter housing access plug need replacement during installation. Apply transmission fluid on the filter seals before mounting them correctly onto the filter using pure automatic transmission fluid. The fluid pan magnet should go inside the transmission fluid pan before you add the fluid pan gasket on its surface. Install the transmission fluid pan and gasket and secure its screws loosely but tight them in a crisscross pattern. Mount the fluid drain plug followed by partial transmission fluid insertion.
