2002 Ford Mustang Timing Chain Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service the timing chain on 2002 Ford Mustang?
A: The first step to maintain the timing chain requires removing both the timing cover and the camshaft position sensor drive gear using bolt removal before extracting the gear piece. Install the timing needle keeping keyways and marks in position while pressing the retaining pin onto the tensioner for chain timing retention. First remove all pieces consisting of the camshaft sprocket and crankshaft sprocket together with the timing chain/belt assembly after that detach the timing chain tensioner using its bolts. During installation place the timing chain tensioner into its correct position while installing bolts for securing it. Move the crankshaft until the number one piston reaches Top Dead Center position (TDC) with the key in the 12 o'clock direction. To access the tensioner pad you should compress the mechanism and place a retention pin before you can proceed. Line up the bottom timing mark on the balance shaft while rotating the camshaft sprocket before installing both camshaft and crankshaft sprockets together with the timing chain in a proper alignment of keyways and marks. First install the camshaft position sensor drive gear then take out the retaining pin before you place the engine front cover into position.
