2003 Ford Mustang Timing Chain Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service the timing chain on 2003 Ford Mustang?
A: First service the timing chain by removing the timing cover and the camshaft position sensor drive gear by uninstalling its bolt. After aligning the timing marks with keyways position the crankshaft put a retaining pin through to compress and retain the timing chain tensioner. Proceed with the reinstall of timing chain/belt and crankshaft sprocket and camshaft sprocket as a combined unit after removing each part. Countering this step requires removal of the timing chain tensioner using its bolts. The timing chain tensioner should be placed correctly before installing its corresponding bolts. Move the crankshaft toward its position where the number one piston reaches Top Dead Center while keeping the key pointed at 12 o'clock. Use a retaining pin to keep the tensioner pad retracting mechanism retracted after compressing it when needed. Initiate the camshaft sprocket adjustment to make the timing mark appear at the balance shaft bottom before putting on the timing chain and sprockets with precise keyway and timing mark alignment. After installing the camshaft position sensor drive gear and eliminating the retaining pin you must put on the engine front cover.
