In the Ford Mustang cars, the Timing Chain plays an important role of ensuring that the crankshaft and the camshaft rotates in harmony so as to enable right valve timing for the engines. Located in the front of the engine, Timing Chain needs lubrication during operation and is usually the norm in high capacity engines. Metal Timing Chains have been preferred over the rubber timing belts since the 1990s because of the reasons such as higher reliability, lesser replacement frequency, etc. Despite the fact that Timing Chains are extremely durable, minor complications may occur as a result of lubrication failure, a problem with the tensioner, and the chain guides, this usually presents itself as a rattling sound from the engine. In pushrod engines, short chain drive is widely used due to torque reversal and for communicating worth gear drives, and especially for Ford Mustang models quiet and durability.

Ford Mustang Timing Chain Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the timing chain on Ford Mustang?
    A:
Service and repair of timing chain requires starting with the removal of the Timing Cover together with the camshaft position sensor drive gear by unfastening its bolt. Apply a retaining pin through the compressed Timing Chain Tensioner after aligning its keyways and marks with the Crankshaft rotational position. The service starts by taking apart the camshaft sprocket with the crankshaft sprocket and timing chain belt assembly then extracting the timing chain tensioner by unthreading the retained bolts. The timing chain tensioner should receive its proper position before bolt installation begins. Move the crankshaft until the number one piston rests at TDC position while the key points to twelve o'clock. To access the tensioner pad retracting mechanism you should compress it then secure it with a retaining pin as needed. The bottom position should be where the timing mark rests on the balance shaft until the camshaft sprocket receives installation along with the crankshaft sprocket and timing chain keeping all components properly aligned. Proceed with reinstalling the camshaft position sensor drive gear then remove the retaining pin as the final installation step includes inserting the engine front cover.
