2002 Ford Thunderbird Battery Cable Parts Q&A

  • Q: How should you service the battery cables safely and effectively on 2002 Ford Thunderbird?
A: The first step for servicing battery cables requires battery removal ensuring proper avoidance of both flames and sparks and lighted substances because batteries can produce explosive gases. Maintaining face protection and eye safety remains essential when handling a battery through the workspace with sufficient ventilation. Children must not access batteries because they contain sulfuric acid along with warnings that you must immediately seek medical help for any acid contact which requires flushing with water for at least 15 minutes. The process for battery/intermediate positive cable removal begins by removing the nut and positive cables from the Battery Junction Box (BJB) before taking off the bolt and negative cable. Detach the pin-type retainer from the battery tray after it. The intermediate positive cable requires disconnection from the rear wire harness inside the luggage compartment with an optional removable top placed in the closed and unlatched configuration. The interior trim cover needs detachment to gain exposure to the positive cable and the rear window defrost grid electrical connector needs detachment before removing the RH A-pillar lower trim panel. Remove the RH rear quarter trim panel from its position while taking off the grille and disconnect the positive cable end by removing its retaining nut. Keep the protective cover off. Begin by opening access to the positive cable end by displacing carpet and dash insulator foam then remove the screws and open the plastic channel. Feed the cable carefully through the support structure brackets starting from the rear while detaching the cable pin-type retainers of the positive wire harness. Extract it through the luggage compartment with additional caution against body structure support bracket sharp edges. To disconnect the engine cable start by taking off the pin-type retainers then removing the rear fender splash shield before disconnecting the starter positive cable through the dash panel bolt and taking away the protective cover and nut and connector. After you take out the bolt from the ground cable you can move it aside to remove all bolts and protective cover of the harness before cutting the existing tie straps and installing new wire tie straps. Unfasten both the ground cable from the starter nut before separating the starter solenoid protective shield from the starter cable while removing its mounting nuts. Follow these steps last: remove the radiator RH lower air deflector by removing screws and pin-type retainers and detach the B+ cable pin-type retainer as well as removing the generator B+ nut while also loosening the cable and starter to generator harness assembly. Follow the exact opposite of the uninstall steps to install.
