2002 Lincoln LS Timing Cover Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Engine Front Timing Cover on 2002 Lincoln LS?
A: The service procedure for engine front cover starts with removing right-hand (RH) valve cover followed by left-hand (LH) valve cover. The service requires removal of both the belt idler pulley and water pump. Then detach the upper and lower radiator hoses. The following sequence must be performed: remove the oil pan followed by the power steering pump and the hydraulic cooling fan pump. Finish the procedure with removal of the bolt and the belt tensioner and then handle the crankshaft front oil seal and its bracket. First disconnect the electrical connectors of the CMP sensor and CKP sensor before you remove the engine front cover bolts with the fuel supply manifold bolt while discarding both the gasket material. Install the engine front cover with inserted dots of silicone gasket and sealant to designated areas within a four-minute window after sealer application. The installation requires a new gasket followed by correct placement of the front cover with sequential bolt torquing. Nuts for the fuel supply manifold should be tightened with the CKP and CMP sensors receiving their electrical connectors. The bracket and crankshaft front oil seal installation will follow. The hydraulic cooling fan pump and power steering pump must be installed after put in the belt tensioner and its bolt. Begin by installing the oil pan then attach lower and upper radiator hoses during the process of water pump installation alongside belt idler pulley installation. The cooling system needs to be filled after reinstalling both the LH and RH valve covers.
