2002 Lincoln Town Car Automatic Transmission Shifter Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the automatic transmission shifter on 2002 Lincoln Town Car?
A: The procedure for automatic transmission shifter service and repair starts with air bag safety precautions through back up power supply depletion before disconnection of battery ground cable for one minute with removal of any auxiliary batteries and power supplies. First remove the steering column lower open panel finish which requires removing its screw followed by shifting the parking brake release handle off position to free the retaining clips. There are five screws that need removal from the lower steering column opening finish panel reinforcement along with four screws from the instrument panel reinforcement brace. You should move the selector lever indicator cable to a side while loosening its screw then detaching it. You can remove the ignition switch lock cylinder after placing it at the RUN position and pushing the release pin together with pulling it forward from its housing. Start by performing the lower steering column shroud removal through successive screw removal that requires four screws then use a screwdriver to remove four nuts to decrease steering column height. The next step includes removing the upper steering column shroud before disconnecting the Transmission Control Switch (TCS) harness connector which enables separation of the TCS harness from both locators and gearshift lever cover from the steering column. Discard the old gearshift lever pin while you take out the gearshift lever from its place. The installation finishes after performing all actions in reverse order during removal.
