2002 Mercury Cougar Heater Core Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the heater core on 2002 Mercury Cougar?
A: The heating core repair process requires initial unfastening of different components before proceeding. The service requirements start with actuator removal through disconnecting the actuating rod together with vacuum lines and nuts. Before handling the recirculation/fresh air vacuum control actuator you must disconnect its connecting rod and then remove its nuts before disconnecting the vacuum line. Next follow these steps after which you should first remove the vacuum line harness then proceed to take out the blend door motor by undoing the four screws and motor detachment. Sever the blower motor/evaporator housing from the heater core while removing the necessary parts including the cover. After removing evaporators and air baffles from parts with air conditioning systems proceed to take out the upper portion of the blower housing by removing metal clips and releasing eight retaining tabs. The blower motor resistor should be detached after which you should separate the lower blower housing halves by unfastening their two retaining tabs. The blower upper housing requires breaking down by removing first the seal as well as three retaining tabs then separating it while using five retaining tabs followed by clip removal. End the disassembly process by extracting air door control shafts while taking out all three air doors from the housing. The assembly requires following backward the disassembly sequence while adding extra clips to protect retaining tabs from damage during housing section connection.
