2002 Mercury Cougar Heater Core Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service the heater core on 2002 Mercury Cougar?
A: The service of the heater core begins by disconnecting the ground cable of the battery and draining the cooling system. The service process requires raising the vehicle and separating the heater hoses from the heater core as well as the vacuum line from the engine before performing a heater core blowout. The platform should be lowered before taking out the floor console. Place the air bag diagnostic monitor aside before disconnecting the vacuum supply line which leads to the vacuum reservoir tank. The air distributor and heater outlet floor duct require removal by first disconnecting the distributor from the heater/evaporator core housing then removing the duct by removing its screw before sliding it upwards and releasing the retaining tabs on each side. To perform the heater core removal disconnect the De-ice sensor electrical connector before removing the heater core cover along with the core itself by releasing all four retaining clips. Disconnect the De-ice sensor by extracting its cable then removing its clip. Reverse the removal procedure to install the heater core and refill the cooling system then verify the normal operation of the heating and air conditioning system.
