2001 Mercury Cougar Heater Core Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the heater core on 2001 Mercury Cougar?
A: Starting heater core service requires disconnecting the battery ground cable followed by cooling system draining. First position the vehicle on raises followed by hose disconnection of the heater core from both heater hoses and vacuum line separation from the engine. The procedure calls for heater core drain-out. Start by lowering the vehicle and remove the floor console before detaching the air bag diagnostic monitor that needs placement to an adjacent side. The vacuum supply line and the air distributor need detachment from the vacuum reservoir tank and heater/evaporator core housing. Disassembly of the heater outlet floor duct begins by unscrewing it while sliding the air duct upward until releasing its retaining tabs on both sides. The De-ice sensor electrical connector needs removal before the heater core cover and core can be taken out by detaching four retaining clips. Withdraw the De-ice sensor through cable removal and unfastening its clip. Reverse the removal steps then refill the cooling system after which check all heating and air conditioning functions for proper operation.
