2002 Mercury Mountaineer Air Bag Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to reactivate the air bag system on 2002 Mercury Mountaineer?
A: A safe approach to activate the air bag system starts with reading all notices and safety information. The restraints control module (RCM) fuse F2.28 (10A) must be removed from the central junction box (CJB) which is situated under the left-hand side of the instrument panel for vehicles built up to 03/2002. The RCM fuse F2.19 should be disconnected from the specified location when dealing with vehicles assembled from 03/2002 onward. Before starting air bag component work you must disconnect the battery ground cable (14301) for one full minute to remove stored back up power in the system. The process of removing the restraint system diagnostic tool from left-hand side air curtain/safety canopy vehicle harness electrical connector requires disconnecting the negative battery cable then reconnecting the left-hand side air curtain/safety canopy electrical connector only after removing the tool. The headliner along with all upper trim panels and attaching hardware on A B and C pillars need replacement if a side air curtain deployed in order to prevent injuries. You should first position the left-hand C-pillar trim panel while seating its retainers before installing the left-hand driver door opening weather strip. Rephrase this procedure again but use it for the right-hand air curtain/safety canopy installation along with equivalent precautions. Drivers should remove and attach the diagnostic tool from the passenger air bag module electrical connector for vehicles made since 03/2002. Close the glove compartment then you will see the air bag indicator turning on for six seconds after the installation process. Install the driver air bag module to the steering wheel by connecting its electrical connectors correctly before securing bolts and back cover plugs to the steering wheel. Road operation can start only after removing diagnostic tools from restraint system components and when every SRS device gets properly connected. Start the ignition to ON and replace the needed RCM fuse while connecting the battery ground cable when there's no presence inside the vehicle. Use the following process to check the SRS by turning the ignition key from ON to OFF while waiting ten seconds before returning to ON to check the air bag indicator that will activate for six seconds and then extinguish. Check and resolve any SRS faults when the air bag indicator does not light or stays lit or flashes while operating. A scan tool can be used to clear all continuous DTCs from the RCM system while the rest of the active restraints must be checked for proper operation.
