2002 Mercury Mountaineer Air Bag Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to Deactivate the Air Bag System on 2002 Mercury Mountaineer?
A: The Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) can be disabled only when using safety glasses during air bag module handling to prevent accidental activation injuries. Transport air bag modules by keeping the air bag and trim cover oriented toward your body while maintaining them out of reach and never resting them with their trim cover directed downward. Sodium hydroxide residue requires a proper handwashing after SRS deployment to eliminate its presence. Any attempts to probe safety systems through connectors of air bag modules or safety belt pretensioners or side air curtain modules will result in unintended system deploying. Check the orientation of sensors in vehicles and inspect potential shape changes because of crashes then replace damaged SRS components. The diagnostic tool should be taken out of the vehicle before it becomes operable on the road. The air bag system must be deactivated by first removing power from all vehicle accessories and ignition switch. You must remove the RCM fuse F2.28 (10A) from the central junction box (CJB) of vehicles built up to 03/2002 whereas vehicles built 03/2002 onward require the removal of fuse F2.19 (10A). The air bag indicator light should remain on for 30 seconds until you finally turn off ignition power. Use the disconnect tool to remove the battery ground cable (14301) to drain away back up power for minimum one minute. First disconnect the driver air bag module electrical connectors along with the horn switch and then connect the restraint system diagnostic tool to the Clock Spring electrical connector. When performing passenger air bag module disconnection you should lower the glove compartment then detach the electrical connector to connect the diagnostic tool at the vehicle harness side. Rephrase the following sentence. Also normalize verbalization when possible. The operation for vehicles with side air curtains begins by lowering the rear door opening weather strip then removing the C-pillar trim panel followed by disconnecting the RH and LH side air curtain/safety canopy electrical connectors and attaching the diagnostic tool to their respective harness sides. Reinstall the RCM fuse which carries the number F2.28 when applying to vehicles built before 03/2002 or F2.19 when focusing on vehicles built after 03/2002 then connect the battery ground cable.
