2002 Mercury Mountaineer Air Bag Control Module Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Air Bag Control Module on 2002 Mercury Mountaineer?
A: The first step to work on the Restraints Control Module (RCM) includes disabling system power while removing the floor console. The servicing procedure for up to March 2002 models requires personnel to separate the RCM by removing electrical connector locking clips and pushing down to free connectors before unfastening retaining nuts to remove the RCM unit. During March 2002 and beyond built vehicles disconnect the RCM electric setup through the thumb locking tab and positioning the connector assurance lever while pulling out the big connector. Step two of the small RCM electrical connector removal requires you to press at the bottom while freeing the retention tab before pulling it out. The RCM will be retrieved after completing nut removal. Job requirements for RCM installation on vehicles produced before March 2002 include disconnecting the negative battery cable and subsequently attaching the RCM followed by installing nuts before connecting electrical connectors and performing locking clip functions. The installation for vehicles built after March 2002 requires disconnecting the battery negative cable before positioning the RCM then installing the nuts followed by connecting the small RCM electrical connector into full seat while ensuring the connector position assurance lever is in full release position prior to joining the large RCM electrical connector. To complete connection of the large RCM connector wait for the audible click before engaging the connector position assurance lever which secures the thumb tab. Finally, repower the system. It is essential to wear safety glasses at all times during supplemental restraint system work but also important to eliminate memory saver devices due to the sensitivity of electronic modules to static charges. Proper SRS operation depends on a functional RCM orientation which needs prompt attention to address any component or mounting damage for safety reasons.
