2002 Mercury Mountaineer Heater Core Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service the heater core and evaporator core housing on 2002 Mercury Mountaineer?
A: Service operations begin by recovering the refrigerant as well as removing the instrument panel. Begin by draining engine coolant and then unfold the carpet to access both support brackets of the left-hand and right-hand instrument panel. The snow shield can be detached by removing all screws from it. During service of DATC Dual Automatic Temperature Control vehicles a technician should disconnect the vacuum line component. The 4x4 control module should be detached by removing its screws. Pressing clamps allows the heater hoses to separate from the heater core so disassemble the spring lock couplings of the evaporator core while throwing away the O-ring seals. The engine compartment operation requires disconnecting vacuum line connectors while pushing vacuum lines inside the passenger compartment to disengage the vacuum line seal attached to the dash panel. Detach every electrical connector including the one linked to the left-hand temperature blend door actuator then pull the wiring harness through the opening until it is free of the heater core and evaporator core housing. When installing DATC systems it becomes necessary to disconnect the right-hand temperature blend door actuator electrical connector and detach the wiring harness. The last step requires the removal of dash panel nuts to extract both heater core and evaporator core housing. The reverse installation steps entail proper cleaning of the refrigerant system with PAG oil or equivalent additive when using a new evaporator core while using new O-ring seals that received PAG oil lubrication. After performing necessary hose cleaning and lubrication and filling the engine coolant to its proper level you should evacuate and leak test and charge the refrigerant system.
