2003 Ford E-150 Air Bag Sensor Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Air Bag Sensor to Ensure Safety and Proper Operation on 2003 Ford E-150?
A: Wear safety glasses for every Air Bag Electronic Crash Sensor (ECS) servicing or repair task to protect yourself from accidental air bag launch. The use of memory saver devices should be avoided because they elevate personal injury hazards. The proper operation of restraints control module (RCM) depends on its correct orientation therefore examine mounting areas and brackets for any signs of damage if a vehicle experienced a crash and replace the RCM even when air bags have not deployed. The restoration of RCM mounting area must return to its original state. It is essential to examine sensor mounting brackets together with wiring pigtails after a collision to ensure proper orientation of all SRS components and their correct installation in replacement cases. Static electrical charges have the potential to damage electronic modules but installing an ECS module circuit protection improvement kit becomes necessary when replacing the ECS module on vehicles that use aftermarket high current draw devices which exceed 75 amps. The air bag warning lamp will illuminate if the ECS module fuse is removed while the ignition switch is turned ON but this normal condition does not indicate any SRS faults. The safing sensor which exists within ECS module cannot be replaced independently from the rest of the module. When repairs call for part replacement the diagnostic procedure should be repeated after re-installing the original part but the issue must persist for the repairs to succeed. The SRS must work without faults in order for the vehicle to go back to the customer. After system depowering start by removing the trim panel that covers the RH cowl side (part number 02345) while disconnecting the ECS module electrical connector by releasing its locking clip and unplugging the connector. The ECS module can be removed by first unfastening the three retaining bolts. Set the ECS inside its position and apply bolts before reconnecting the electrical connector and engaging the locking clip. Then put the RH cowl side trim panel back in place and activate the system power.
