2003 Ford Expedition Shift Cable Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Shift Cable for the Column Shift Selector Lever on 2003 Ford Expedition?
A: The repair process of the shift interlock cable for the column shift selector lever starts with removing the instrument panel lower finish panel. Transformation of the transmission shift cable assembly requires staying away from direct force contact between the steering column transmission selector lever arm and the steering column bracket. Start by disconnecting the shift cable first from the steering column and then from the transmission selector lever arm before you can support it. You should use your fingers to lift the locking tabs which will release the shift cable from its position on the steering column bracket before unscrewing the retaining cable and removing it. Pass the rubber grommet together with the shift cable through the floor panel opening. It is essential to disable air suspension electrical power by turning off the air suspension switch in the RH kick panel area before vehicle hoisting, jacking or towing procedures because maintaining power activates unexpected air spring inflation or deflation sequences which could cause shifting. The vehicle should remain in neutral mode while positioning it on a hoist. It is essential to avoid applying any force to the shift cable that connects the manual control lever to the shift cable bracket. Free the manual control lever of the shift cable by first undoing the cable from the shift cable bracket and then pressing on the release tabs. Extract the transmission (4R70W) shift cable bracket through the removal of its bolts and by subsequently removing the bracket itself. Separate the cable from the cable route assist clip which resides on the transmission bell housing. You should reverse the installation procedure by inserting the cable into its designated slot at the cable route assist clip where it prevents exhaust contact and make necessary shift cable adjustments.
