2004 Ford Expedition Shift Cable Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Column Shift Cable and Bracket on 2004 Ford Expedition?
A: The procedure for servicing and repairing the column shift selector lever cable and bracket begins by taking out the instrument panel lower finish panel. It is essential to protect the transmission shift cable assembly by refraining from putting force between the steering column transmission selector lever and steering column bracket. The first step is disconnecting the transmission shift cable from both the steering column before moving to cut it free from the transmission selector lever arm and support bracket. First raise the two locking tabs to remove the transmission shift cable from its mounting position on the steering column bracket. The cable retaining screw should be removed to access the rubber grommet and transmission shift cable which can then pass through the floor panel. You should position the vehicle in neutral mode on a hoist while avoiding applying any force to the transmission shift cable section between the manual control lever and the transmission shift cable bracket. You should disconnect the transmission shift cable from its position on the manual control lever by pressing the lock tabs to let the cable free itself from the bracket. Extract the transmission shift cable bracket by removing its bolts and extracting the bracket before continued removal. Separate the cable from its supporting clip which exists at the transmission bell housing. To install the component reverse the steps of removal while making sure the cable fits into its designated slot on the cable route assist clip and positions the shift cable correctly.
