2003 Ford Explorer Air Bag Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to Reactivate the Air Bag System and Ensure Proper Installation of Safety Components on 2003 Ford Explorer?
A: A disconnect of the battery negative cable must occur prior to starting the air bag system activation process. Start the procedure by taking out the diagnostic tool from the pretensioner floor connector and immediately hook up the safety belt buckle pretensioner connector. Start reactivating the air bag system by taking out the diagnostic tool from the left safety canopy vehicle harness electrical connector and then connecting the left safety canopy electrical connector. Safety canopy deployment requires a headliner replacement together with all A, B, C pillar upper trim panels and their attaching hardware because not doing so creates a risk of personal injury. The left C-pillar trim panel hook needs to fit into the sheet metal opening without any wrapping of the safety belt webbing. Position the trim panel with its safety belt shoulder height adjuster and trim panel sliding insert both at the highest points. After proper retention of front upper and lower trim retainers push the C-pillar trim inward to set the retainers. Complete the right-hand side by detaching the diagnostic tool from the right safety canopy vehicle harness electrical connector and connect the right safety canopy electrical connector while applying the same safety precautions from the installation process. Reinstall the C-pillar trim panel followed by battery ground cable installation for power seats vehicle models and positioning the front seats to the rear. The process to deplete back up power starts with battery ground cable removal followed by one minute of waiting time which includes disconnecting any auxiliary batteries. Connect the passenger air bag module electrical connector after removing the diagnostic tool from this connector and close the glove compartment. Place the driver air bag module on the steering wheel then join the horn switch electrical connector while verifying that the Clock Spring connectors match for preventing damage. Driver air bag module bolts should be installed followed by steering wheel back cover plug installation before reconnecting the battery ground cable. After that remove all restraint system diagnostic tools to prove out the supplemental restraint system. Active restraints must be checked for proper functionality among vehicles that have safety canopies installed.
