2004 Ford Explorer Air Bag Parts Q&A

  • Q: How Should the Air Bag Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Be Properly Depowered Before Servicing on 2004 Ford Explorer?
A: Safety glasses must be worn when depowering the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) before servicing as a protection against potential air bag deployment injuries. The connectors on both the air bag module and safety canopy module must never be probed due to deployment risks that will cause personal injuries. It is dangerous to change the mounting position of the Restraints Control Module (RCM) while connected and engine running due to safety canopy deployment potential. All memory saver devices need to be prohibited from use. A seat requiring service that includes its air bag side or safety belt pretensioner needs the SRS system to be depowered during the service process. First disable every accessory inside the vehicle and turn off the ignition switch. The RCM fuse F2.19 (10A) needs removal from the central junction box (CJB) situated beneath the left instrument panel side. Ensure that the air bag indicator stays illuminated continuously for thirty seconds while checking that you correctly removed the fuse when the ignition is turned ON. Turn the ignition OFF before you disconnect the battery ground cable and wait one minute to allow the back up power supply to drain up while ensuring all auxiliary batteries are disconnected. Make sure to eliminate every diagnostic tool related to restraints from the vehicle before conducting repowering operations. After placing the ignition switch to ON then return the RCM fuse F2.19 (10A) to its proper location in the CJB. Connect the battery ground cable only when you have verified there is no human presence or obstructions in front of air bag modules. Testing of the SRS requires users to turn the ignition key from ON to OFF and then back to ON after connecting the battery ground cable. A continuous illumination of the air bag indicator will last six seconds before it turns off. A fault requires diagnosis and repair because of any indicator behavior that includes non-illumination, continuous illumination or flashing or a five-set five-beep chime. The vehicle cannot be released without clearing all continuous DTCs from the RCM using available scan tool technology.
