2003 Ford Explorer Sport Parking Brake Cable Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the rear parking brake cable and conduit on 2003 Ford Explorer Sport?
A: Service and repair work on the rear parking brake cable and conduit requires completely releasing the parking brake control and taking tension off the parking brake system. Start the procedure by drawing the front parking brake cable and conduit before inserting a drill bit or similar retainer with a 4 mm (5/32-inch) diameter into the parking brake control. Service and repair operations start by removing the tire and wheel assembly followed by disconnecting the parking brake intermediate cable at the locating hole end of the connector and separating the RH parking brake rear cable and conduit from the LH parking brake rear cable and conduit at the parking brake cable equalizer. Separate the RH parking brake rear cable from the LH parking brake rear cable conduit by first removing their connecting clip then disengage the cable bracket by using the parking brake cable clip compression method. The next step requires removal of both the RH parking brake rear cable and conduit from its location at the rear parking brake cable retainer and RH hydraulic brake line clip. Take out the retainer clip bolt to remove the cable retainer clip after which you can unclip the parking brake rear cable and conduit from the brake line clip located on top of the rear axle housing. The retainer can be compressed to free up the rear cable and conduit from anchoring to the brake caliper plate before unfastening them from the parking brake system. To install the system hook the parking brake rear cable and conduit to both the parking brake lever followed by a connection to the rear disc brake caliper anchor plate then secure it at the brake line clip on top of the rear axle housing. The parking brake cable retainer clip needs installation by first positioning itself into place before securing it with the retainer clip bolt. The RH parking brake rear cable and conduit needs to be attached to the RH hydraulic brake line clip followed by a connection to the rear parking brake cable retainer then to the parking brake cable bracket where positioning and correct seating must be confirmed. The parking brake rear cables must be hooked up between the LH version and RH version conduit through the parking brake cable equalizer. After the installation of the front wheel and tire assemblies users must connect the parking brake intermediate cable to the LH parking brake rear cable and conduit and perform a tensioning process by drawing the front parking brake cable and conduit down before removing the retainer from the parking brake control.
