2003 Ford F-350 Super Duty Timing Cover Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the timing cover on 2003 Ford F-350 Super Duty?
A: Service and repair of the timing cover should start with battery ground cable disconnection and complete valve cover and radiator and water pump removal. After raising and supporting the vehicle you must remove all top bolts and the lower bolt to position the power steering pump aside. To proceed with the service disconnect the Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor electrical connector then drain the engine oil by removing the drain plug. Eventually take the four front oil pan bolts before lowering the vehicle. Start by disassembling the crankshaft front seal as you also disconnect the Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor electrical connector. Start by taking out the (A) bolt and the (B) belt idler pulley after which the other bolts should be removed. An individual should clean sealing surfaces with a plastic scraper instead of using metal scrapers or abrasive tools when performing the work. Take the engine front cover off the dowel while removing the gasket and clean both mating surfaces. Place the engine front cover gasket onto the front cover prior to applying silicone gasket along with sealant to both cylinder head to block surface and oil pan to block surface. Fasten the engine front cover with its place gasket onto the dowel before beginning fastening the bolts loosely. Perform two stages of engine front cover bolt tightening: first secure fasteners 1-7 to 20-30 Nm (15-22 ft. lbs.) and secondly torque fasteners 6 through 15 to 40-55 Nm (30-41 ft. lbs.). Establish the CMP electric connection while adding a fresh crankshaft front seal to the system. Before tightening the bolts, raise and support the vehicle one more time. Install the bolts loosely then apply torque first to 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.) and then turn the bolt another 60 degrees. Connect the crankshaft position sensor electrical connector while placing the power steering pump into position with the exclusion of using the front lower hole and secure the bolts. The procedure continues by installing the drain plug before lowering the vehicle while you replace the valve covers along with the water pump and radiator. Last of all add clean engine oil before reconnecting the battery ground cable.
