2003 Ford Focus Air Bag Control Module Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and replace the Air Bag Control Module safely on 2003 Ford Focus?
A: Safety glasses should be worn before starting the procedure because they prevent accidental air bag deployment injuries. It is dangerous to insert or touch the connectors connected to the air bag module therefore safety goggles must always be used to protect against such harm. Memory saver devices must not be employed. When both the RCM fuse gets pulled out and the ignition key is ON the air bag warning lamp turns on as intended but this condition does not represent an SRS fault. A complete test of the SRS system without faults needs to be successful before sending the vehicle to the customer. Get the vehicle data from a diagnostic tool before beginning the system depowering process. Begin by removing the floor console followed by disconnecting the RCM electrical connectors while noting that removal of the RCM requires counting the retaining bolts which serve as ground elements before taking out the RCM. The installation process requires the RCM must be placed properly since its retaining bolts function as grounding elements that protect against injuries. Reinstall the RCM by following the initial disassembly steps before activating the system without performing any proof procedures. The diagnostic tool needs to be used to configure any newly installed RCMs. Proceeding with SRS proof requires turning the ignition key to OFF followed by waiting ten seconds before returning it to ON position for air bag indicator visual examination. The indicator should display continuous lighting that lasts for about six seconds before it stops. A fault in the SRS system can cause the air bag indicator to fail to illuminate and it may stay on without flickering before flickering could occur 30 seconds after turning the ignition to ON. A diagnostic tone will sound in five sets of five beeps to signal the need for a diagnosis and repair of both air bag indicator and SRS system faults when these problems exist with the inoperative indicator. A scan tool should be used to remove all continuous DTCs from the RCM.
