2002 Ford Focus Air Bag Control Module Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Safely Remove and Replace the Air Bag Control Module on 2002 Ford Focus?
A: Strong safety eyewear must be worn before handling the Restraints Control Module (RCM) because accidental air bag activation poses a threat to safety. Start SRS component work only when the RCM back up power supply has exhausted after waiting at least one minute of battery ground cable disconnection. The use of radio key code savers should be avoided while completing this procedure to lower the chances of untimely system deployment. During normal operations the air bag warning lamp turns on while the RCM fuse is detached along with activation of the ignition switch. This normal condition does not indicate any SRS fault. Start with downloading the vehicle data through a diagnostic tool prior to disconnecting the SRS component. After taking out the floor console disconnect the RCM electrical connectors while keeping in mind that the RCM gets its grounding from the bolts before its removal. When installing the RCM ensure it fits properly since the retaining bolts lead to the ground path. It is always unsafe to probe any SRS electrical connectors including those found in air bag modules. Follow the removal step order to mount the RCM after which restart the SRS operation while skipping system proofing. The required setup of a newly installed RCM needs to be performed through the diagnostic tool. The SRS proving process involves turning the ignition key into OFF position first before waiting 10 seconds then turning the key to ON position while checking for the air bag indicator illumination. The indicator of the air bag module should shine continuously during six seconds before turning itself off. An SRS fault exists when the air bag indicator fails to light up or refuses to turn off after the key ignition to ON position. The air bag indicator may need 30 seconds to start flashing once the ignition is turned ON because the RCM performs SRS testing. A five-set pattern of five individual beeps will play through the speakers when the air bag indicator malfunctions while also reporting both air bag indicator and SRS faults need servicing. Complete the clearing process for all continuous DTCs through the RCM system with a suitable diagnostic scanner.
