2003 Ford Ranger Transmission Pan Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Transmission Pan on 2003 Ford Ranger?
A: All repair and service work on the fluid pan begins with a hoisted vehicle set to NEUTRAL position. The transmission servo heat shield needs to be unclipped from the fluid pan rail if it exists so you can remove the fluid pan. A drain pan should be positioned directly below the transmission fluid pan while you empty all transmission fluid. Begin removing all transmission fluid pan screws with exception to retain the two screws located in front then finish loosening the front screws. The rear of the transmission fluid pan needs to be lowered to drain all the fluid before the front screws can be removed. You should remove the transmission fluid pan after draining it while discarding the old gasket. The procedure requires unscrewing the filter screw to discard both the transmission fluid filter and then the filter itself. Check the transmission fluid pan and magnet while cleaning their mating surfaces. It is important to thoroughly flush the transmission cooler in addition to its lines. Before installing the new filter on the main control valve body, users should apply automatic transmission fluid to the O-ring seals for protection. Mount the oil pan magnet at the fluid pan after you set a new gasket on the pan with proper alignment before putting in the screws loosely. Screw installation should begin with a crisscross pattern and follow protocol for installing servo heat shield if present. After parking properly the vehicle should be positioned in a lower position with application of the brake and engine start. Transfer clean automatic transmission fluid to your dry transmission and converter with a minimum starting amount of 3.7 liters (4 quarts) followed by checking correct operation and fluid level when moving through all gears with the range selector lever before rechecking fluid level.
