- Q: How to service and repair the Shift Cable and bracket for a column shift on 2003 Mercury Sable?A: The first step to fix the shift cable and bracket on a column shift involves taking out the LH lower instrument panel trim. Using a small screwdriver at the left side of the column, you can pop the shift cable away from the shift selector lever pivot ball. Use a combination of lifting the locking tab with a pull-up motion on the shift actuator cable fitting to extract the shift cable from its retaining bracket. Start by taking out the cruise control actuator from the engine area, followed by removing the cable grommet from the dash panel attachment. First, remove the shift cable nut from its mount on the manual control lever, after which you can detach the switch by lifting the locking tab and pulling up on the shift cable. The bracket retaining the transmission shift cable should also be discarded along with the locking clip. End the procedure by drawing the shift cable through the opening in the dash panel. To reinstall this system, use the new locking clip for the original process while properly adjusting the shift cable length.
