2004 Ford Explorer Air Bag Sensor Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to Service the Air Bag Sensor at the Second Row C-Pillar on 2004 Ford Explorer?
A: The service procedure for the side impact sensor at the second row C-pillar starts with system de-energization for safety reasons. It is essential to check for any deformation on the sensor mounting bracket and wiring pigtail after accidents because any sensor components need immediate replacement along with correct repositioning of damaged supplemental restraint system (SRS) components regardless of whether air bags deployed. Safety glasses should be worn continually when performing this task to protect against potential injuries caused by accidental air bags releasing and memory saver devices should never be utilized because they present serious health threats. The air bag warning lamp will turn on when removing the RCM fuse with the ON ignition switch position and this normal condition does not reveal any SRS faults. The vehicle remains ineligible for customer delivery unless the SRS exhibits no faults while being fully operational. Installing a new part should be the repair solution yet original part reinstallation becomes necessary to perform diagnostic steps twice if problems persist. Although shown right-hand side the left-hand side mirror it for freedom in which the left and right C-pillar side impact sensors are non-exchangeable. To gain access to the sensor you must pull out the rear quarter trim panel next to the C-pillar which frees its retaining clips. Wear protection to ensure safety during installation because you should maintain a disconnected negative battery cable before applying the opposite process. The successful operation of the system depends on keeping the side impact sensor retaining bolt torque within the prescribed parameters. The opening in C-pillar sheet metal needs to match the location tab of the mounting bracket while installing the second-row side impact sensor. Position the safety belt anchor and install its bolt without twisting the webbing of the safety belt. The system should receive power for the completion of the operation.
