2004 Ford Explorer Shift Cable Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Shift Cable on 2004 Ford Explorer?
A: The first step for transmission selector cable maintenance requires hoisting the vehicle into Drive position. Begin by taking out the upper and lower steering column shrouds followed by the specified components when working on the transmission selector cable. The installation steps should start by executing the reverse process of removal. Operating the cable grommet means pushing it directly into the floor pan opening. Pause repairs of Prndl cable adjustment by removing the lower dash panel as well as both upper and lower steering column shrouds. Move the range selector lever to first gear position followed by setting it to the (D) position which lies two detents from first gear. Affix a three-pound weight to the range selector lever end before positioning the pointer at the center point of the (D) area by using the thumbwheel on Prndl cable housing. Reinstall the upper and lower steering column shrouds followed by the lower dash panel only after centering the adjustment. The shift cable requires adjustment after its installation. Secure the cable grommet with high tension against the floor pan to block water leakage into the passenger area.
