2005 Ford Explorer Shift Cable Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Shift Cable on 2005 Ford Explorer?
A: The first step when servicing the selector lever cable requires positioning the vehicle on a hoist set to drive and removing the lower steering column shroud and finish panel. Start by applying a screwdriver to unfasten the 4 screws of the wire harness shield before putting it away. After that disconnect the shift cable from the transmission selector lever arm along with its bracket. Start by pushing the rubber grommet into the bulkhead and disconnect the shift cable (both from the manual control lever and shift cable bracket). After that, remove the shift cable from the vehicle. New retainers should be secured to each shift cable end before positioning the cable through the bulkhead opening without placing the rubber grommet in its seat. The shift cable installation needs two connections before remounting the wire harness shield using four screws. Reinstall the lower steering column shroud with 3 screws before setting the rubber grommet into the bulkhead then attaching the lower steering finish panel with 2 screws. A 1.4-kg weight should be attached at the gearshift lever while rotating it clockwise from first to (D) position, then rotating it counterclockwise three detents in total. Put the shift cable bracket in position before screwing in the bolts which need to be tightened to 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.). The manual lever should be turned forward until fully extended before moving it backward 3 detents to the (D) position to connect the shift cable to the shift cable bracket. During this operation make sure the retainer correctly enters the bracket. Follow these steps to finish the installation: secure the shift cable at the manual lever while pressing down the shift cable adjustment lock into lock position and dropping the 1.4-kg weight before checking the engine starts in park and neutral and reversing lamps turn on in reverse. Recheck the shift cable if these conditions are not met.
