2004 Ford Explorer Sport Trac Transmission Pan Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Transmission Pan, Gasket, and Filter on 2004 Ford Explorer Sport Trac?
A: Start the service and repair procedure of the fluid pan gasket filter when the vehicle sits on a hoist while the transmission remains in neutral gear. The transmission servo heat shield should be unclipped from the fluid pan rail if present before moving it off to the side. The transmission fluid drain begins with a gradual unscrewing of transmission fluid pan screws starting from all except the front two while the front screws remain tight. After the drainage occurs through the rear pan movement, the front screws can be removed. Then remove the transmission fluid pan and throw away the past gasket. Extract and dispose of the transmission fluid filter after unscrewing the filter screw and removing the filter. A complete inspection on the transmission fluid pan along with its magnet requires verification of free mating surfaces. Lubricate new fluid filter O-ring seals with automatic transmission fluid before placing them on the main control valve body during installation. An operator installs the fluid pan magnet within the pan after attaching a new gasket to it properly for screw alignment. Afterward they loosely apply screws. Proceed with screw tightening by following a crisscross pattern. Hayward equipment should have its servo heat shield repositioned to cover the servos before securing clips to the pan rail. Start filling the transmission with clean automatic transmission fluid that reaches 3.7 liters (4 quarts) up to its correct fluid level. Begin by engaging the park brake followed by engine start and manual operation of the range selector through its entire range of gears while checking the transmission fluid level.
