2004 Ford Focus Brake Booster Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the vacuum brake booster on equipped with a 2.3L PZEV engine on 2004 Ford Focus?
A: The service process for vacuum brake boosters starts by taking out the battery tray for all vehicles holding a 2.3L PZEV engine. Disconnection of the battery along with air cleaner and outlet tube removal stands as the first procedure when working on 2.0L ZETEC or 2.0L SPI engine vehicles. The next step requires removing the speed control unit electrical connector and detaching the speed control unit before lowering it when needed. The procedure to service a 2.3L PZEV requires first removing the two fuel canister assembly bolts and setting it aside before disconnecting the electrical connector and uninstalling the two VMV bolts and separate fuel lines. First disconnect the heat shield from the bulkhead before removing it and next separate the heater hose bracket along with brake tubes from the bulkhead. The hydraulic control unit (HCU) must be removed after which the master cylinder needs to be removed by exercising caution to avoid paintwork damage from brake fluid. To remove the brake booster actuating rod from the brake pedal start by pressing the brake pedal followed by pressing the clip then taking out the pin. Extract the brake booster retaining nuts and proceed with removing the brake booster from the setup. Insert the brake booster actuator rod through the bulkhead rubber boot and correctly position the brake booster gasket on the brake booster before you start the fixture operation in reverse. Finally, bleed the brake system.
