2004 Ford Focus Parking Brake Cable Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the parking brake cable on 2004 Ford Focus?
A: The repair process for the parking brake cable starts with removing the floor console followed by parking brake release. The adjustment nut of the parking brake cable needs to be opened to its full thread length and the retaining clip must be removed so the adjustment nut becomes free. Begin by supporting the exhaust pipe during wheel and tire removal. Then separate the exhaust tailpipe from the muffler assembly through the removal of nuts and discarding them while unhooking the hanger insulators. First detach the center hanger insulator then take out the exhaust center heat shield before removing the exhaust rear heat shield from the floor panel. The installation process starts by turning parking brake cables against each other at 90 degrees while keeping tracks of how the outer clips should go back into position. Begin by detaching the rear cable through both retaining clips and remove side air deflectors by unscrewing their mountings and unclipping them. Cable guides should be detached first from the floor panel followed by outer cables from their bracket. When working on vehicles which use anti-lock brakes it is required to disconnect both rear wheel speed sensors. Vehicle owners must detach the rear drum brake wheel hub assembly and brake drum before they can remove the parking brake cable guide from the tie bar on both sides and disconnect the cables on both sides. The parking brake connectivity cables must be completely removed when you finish detaching the cables and have depressed their clips one by one. Vehicle owners must pull back the parking brake lever to separate the parking brake cable from its ties to the caliper on both rear sides before disconnecting it from the parking brake lever and removing the conduit retaining clip while disconnecting the cable with conduit. Complete the procedure by taking away all parking brake cables. Check the left hand cable using white sleeve identification and the right hand cable with a black sleeve while inspecting exhaust hanger insulators along with any necessary replacement of damaged parts through lubricated installation methods. The installation of new nuts for the exhaust tailpipe and muffler assembly precedes a reverse order application of the removal steps needed to secure the parts. Directional adjustment of the parking brake follows part assembly.
