A 18 mm open-end wrench should be used to push down on the retainer while turning it which will allow the thermostat to escape from the housing. When installing the thermostat spring keep its small terminal aimed at the thermostat housing. To install the thermostat correctly align its pin with the housing hole before verifying that all tabs securing the retainer into the housing tabs remain locked. The thermostat installation occurs when the component is set in position and secured by means of the 18 mm open-end wrench pushing down to turn the thermostat retainer.
