2004 Lincoln Navigator Brake Pads Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the front brake pads on 2004 Lincoln Navigator?
A: The procedure for servicing front brake pads requires installation of a new lining if pad wear has reached or exceeded the desired thickness above metal plate material or rivets while new pads need to be installed as complete axle sets. Clear the brake fluid reservoir by drawing contents using an appropriate suction device until it reaches a level of half-full. Check the brake pads after wheel removal to evaluate their condition. The spring of the anchor housing must never be forced off the brake caliper and only install springs that show no damage. Remove the anchor housing spring with attention to place two-tabbed ends at the upper brake caliper cavity on the left-hand side. You can extract the lower part of the left-hand anchor housing spring through central force at its center followed by bottomward traction which allows upward rotation for removal. To remove the upper portion of the anchor housing spring on the right-hand side insert the two-tabbed end into the lower brake caliper cavity while doing the same process to pull it down from its location. After removing the brake caliper from the brake hose you should discard the brake caliper-to-anchor plate bolts and related guide pins together with boots. Move brake pads from brake caliper by using a wood block along with a used brake pad for boot protection when compressing piston chambers. The brake disc thickness measurement requires replacement with a new unit if the measurement exceeds specification. Brake caliper installation requires putting guide pin bushings into each bore before applying grease to their interior both outside the threads and pushing guide pins through the bushings. The brake caliper should receive the inboard pad after its installation followed by removal of protective material from the outboard pad which needs to be installed next. Insert and tighten the brake caliper on the brake disc before securing guide pins while mounting the dust caps. To install the zero-drag spring start with the two-tabbed end of the anchor housing spring followed by insertion and twisting the tab into the proper brake caliper cavity. You must rotate the anchor housing spring while guiding the upper section to attach onto the anchor plate followed by guiding the other section to match with the brake caliper anchor plate before you push it to secure a correct seating position. To complete the installation you should add the wheel and tire before performing several brake applications to check proper functioning.
