2005 Ford Excursion Air Bag Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: What are the essential steps and precautions when replacing a deployed driver air bag module on 2005 Ford Excursion?
A: A deployed driver air bag module requires replacement together with the air bag electronic crash sensor (ECS) module. Safety glasses must always be worn when doing repairs to vehicles which contain air bag supplemental restraint system (SRS) modules and the air bag module with trim cover should face away from your body when handling it in order to avoid potential injuries from unintentional deployment. Receiver the live air bag module properly with the trim cover oriented upward and wash your hands thoroughly with soap-water when finished handling the bag since its surface carries sodium hydroxide gas generant combustion remnants that cause skin irritation. Touching the air bag module connectors should be avoided to stop accidental deployment and damaged or discolored air bag modules must be replaced instead of using repainted parts. Avoid using memory saver devices because they do not protect against personal injuries. When the RCM fuse is removed during the ignition ON phase the air bag warning lamp should illuminate but this does not equal an SRS fault. A vehicle should only be given back to customers when the SRS has no faults and operates accurately. Only replacement solutions are permitted in repairs but returning the original part will be necessary if new components fail to solve the problem before performing diagnostic testing again. Assuming that the necessary depowering procedure for safety precautions is done first the driver air bag module can be removed by disconnecting power followed by plugging out the back cover's two plugs then unscrewing its two screws and detaching the electrical connections to both the horn and Clock Spring before extracting the module. Connect the horn electrical connector and the driver air bag module electrical connector followed by steering wheel positioning the module. Next install two bolts then reinstall the two steering wheel back cover plugs before engaging the system power.
