2005 Ford Excursion Timing Cover Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Engine Front Timing Cover on 2005 Ford Excursion?
A: Begin the engine front cover repair and service by hoisting the vehicle with transmission set to neutral while also disconnecting the battery ground cable. The first step in servicing the engine front cover begins with removing both valve covers as well as the radiator and coolant pump. The power steering pump detachment starts with removing top and lower bolts before disconnection of the Crankshaft Position sensor electrical collector. Engine oil drainage occurs with the drain plug removal before the four front oil pan bolts and crankshaft front seal disassembly. Disconnect the CMP sensor electric connector while you remove the idler pulley accessory drive belt bolt. A plastic tool should be used to clean sealing surfaces without causing scratches before the engine front cover and gasket are removed. Thorough cleaning of mating surfaces requires silicone gasket remover and metal surface prep solution after which you should inspect the surfaces for damage. Install the engine front cover gasket onto the front cover before applying silicone gasket and sealant around the cylinder block-to-oil pan contact points and between the cylinder head and cylinder block. Place the engine front cover with gasket onto the dowels before loosely placing its bolts. Heating the engine front cover fasteners lets you tighten them to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.) for fasteners 1 through 7 before moving to 48 Nm (35 ft. lbs.) torque for fasteners 6 through 15. First position the accessory drive belt idler pulley before putting the bolt into place. After that connect the CMP sensor electrical connector and set in a new crankshaft front seal. Tighten the bolts of the crankshaft front seal in two stages by starting with 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.) and proceeding to an additional 60 degrees of rotation. The power steering pump installation requires placement without using the front lower hole followed by bolt installation through the CKP sensor electrical connector. After reinstalling the drain plug with valve covers coolant pump and radiator the engine requires clean engine oil for filling and battery ground cable reconnection.
