2005 Ford Expedition Oil Pan Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the oil pan on 2005 Ford Expedition?
A: The first step for oil pan servicing and repairs includes positioning the vehicle to neutral while resting on a hoist then draining the engine oil. The service demands removal of both frame crossmember securing bolts because you must detach the wire harness bracket. A jack stand should support the front axle housing of 4WD vehicles while marking bolts and brackets for precise reinstallation. You should lower the axle for oil pan removal by first removing the right-hand front axle housing mounting bolt, the left-hand front mounting bolt and the left-hand rear mounting bolt yet maintaining the vacuum lines intact. Before installation, examine the oil pan gasket for damage then decide if it needs replacement along with the oil pan-to-oil pump gaskets. Dangerously remove the 16 bolts and oil pan and gaskets. Scrape and clean the sealing surfaces using a plastic tool with silicone gasket remover while making sure to avoid tools that might create scratches. Apply silicone gasket and sealant at the crankshaft rear seal retainer plate-to-cylinder block and engine front cover-to-cylinder block sealing surfaces. It is essential to secure the sealant within four minutes to stop oil leakage from occurring later. Move forward by installing the 16 bolts on the oil pan gasket while allowing this temporary placement. Following this initial step tighten the bolts twice: initially to 2 Nm (18 inch lbs.) and afterward to 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.) and finally adding an additional 60-degree torque. 4WD vehicles require installation of the front axle housing along marked positions then bolt installation with each tightening to 89 Nm (66 ft. lbs.). Insert the frame crossmember through its mounting points while tightening all four bolts to 102 Nm which equals 75 ft. lbs. next place and tighten the wire harness bracket bolt up to 10 Nm equal to 89 inch lbs. Add clean engine oil into the crankcase as the last step of the procedure.
