2004 Ford Expedition Oil Pan Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the oil pan on a 4x2 on 2004 Ford Expedition?
A: Service and repair of the oil pan in 4x2 vehicles requires a preliminary step where you must disable the air suspension switch to stop air spring fluctuation that might cause shift movements during maintenance work. After securing the car in neutral position it on a hoisting system for oil draining. Disassemble the bolts attached to the frame crossmember then detach the wire harness bracket using its bolt removal. The next step requires you to eliminate the oil pan retaining bolts until the pan is free to remove from its position. Plastic scrapers should clean the sealing surfaces meticulously without metal tools that may create swirling scratches causing tank leakage so remove the used oil pan gasket. Study the product instructions thoroughly to apply silicone gasket remover and metal surface prep for cleaning the sealing surfaces. Deployment of silicone gasket and sealant must occur at the engine front cover to cylinder block mating surface and rear oil seal retainer to cylinder block sealing surface during installation but if not secured in four minutes, the sealant should be removed and the area must be cleaned again. Start by placing the new oil pan gasket on the engine block followed by the oil pan and loosely tighten the bolts at 2 Nm and then 20 Nm and finish with a 60° additional torque. Before reinstallation of the drain plug and new oil filter reinstall the wire harness bracket while securing it with its appropriate bolt. Attach the frame crossmember bolts while filling the engine with clean oil before starting the engine to check for leakages. Turn on the air suspension by activating its switch when the system is available.
