The Oil Pan in Ford Expedition automobile is mainly used for storing the engine oil in order to maintain appropriate temperatures and grease of the other parts of the engine. The Wet Sump model, incorporated under the Oil Pan, functions to draw oil up through a pickup tube by an oil pump and it then circulates this throughout the engine before returning it to the pan. It is critical to ensuring that the engine is performing at its premier and various factors must be put into consideration for this design. Up to the previous models, the Ford Expedition Oil Pans were mostly produced using stamped steel while in the current models, cast aluminum is used. This evolution in the materials is really helpful in making the end product durable and at the same time efficient. However, there is disparity in the design of the Oil Pan from one Expedition model to another, this could be occasioned by the nature of the engine or performance properties to ensure that the former caters for the latter appropriately.

Ford Expedition Oil Pan Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the oil pan on Ford Expedition?
    A:
Vehicle service and maintenance of the oil pan begins with placement in neutral mode followed by hoisting the vehicle. The first step involves draining engine oil followed by removing 4 frame crossmember bolts and disconnecting the transmission fluid cooler tube support brackets together with the starter wiring harness from the stud bolt. Unhook the wiring harness retainers of the starter. Place a jackstand beneath the front axle housing of four-wheel drive vehicles and place marks on the bolts and brackets before removing them. After removing the right-hand front axle housing mounting bolt the mechanic needs to proceed with left-hand front and rear mounting bolts while keeping a close eye on the vacuum lines to protect them as they lower the axle to access the oil pan. Remove the oil pan while observing that the gasket can be reused unless it shows damage it must be discarded with new gasket replacements for both oil pan connections. A set of plastic scraping tool with silicone gasket remover should clean the sealing surfaces but always avoid scrubbing with rough materials which create scratches. Per the instructions apply the silicone gasket and sealant between the crankshaft rear seal retainer plate and cylinder block and between the engine front cover and cylinder block while permitting it to dry according to specifications. Secure the 16 bolts of the oil pan and gasket lightly before torqueing them to 2 Nm (18 lb-in) and 20 Nm (15 lb-ft) in sequence, then finish by tightening an additional 60 degrees. Install the front axle housing of 4WD vehicles by aligning its marked positions and tighten each of three bolts to 89 Nm (66 lb-ft). The process includes reattaching the frame crossmember through 4 bolts which need torque to 102 Nm (75 lb-ft) while installing the starter wiring harness coupled with transmission fluid cooler tube support brackets secured by a nut tightened to 10 Nm (89 lb-in) before connecting the starter wiring harness retainer to the cylinder block and adding clean engine oil to the crankcase.
