2005 Ford Explorer Rear Crossmember Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to Service the Rear Crossmember for Transmission Support on 2005 Ford Explorer?
A: The service work for the transmission support crossmember starts with raising and securely supporting the vehicle. You should start the process by unscrewing the splash shield crossmember bolts which total four in number and afterward remove the shield. During reinstallation check that bolts reach the correct torque value of 40 Nm (30 lb-ft). The service begins with unscrewing the two heat shield screws followed by using a suitable jack for transmission support. The two transmission mountnuts should be removed with a torque setting of 90 Nm (66 lb-ft) before replacing. The right side plastic shield on the transmission crossmember needs removal before tightening it to 9 Nm (80 lb-in). Begin by removing the four upper crossmember bolts before tightening them to 80 Nm (59 lb-ft) and after that remove the four lower crossmember bolts which need to be tightened to 80 Nm (59 lb-ft) when reinstalling. The transmission crossmember removal must end with its reverse reinstallation steps.
