2005 Ford Explorer Sport Trac Clock Spring Parts Q&A

  • Q: What Precautions and Steps Are Involved in Servicing the Clock Spring Assembly on 2005 Ford Explorer Sport Trac?
A: Prior to servicing the Clock Spring assembly it is essential to wear safety glasses because they protect you from air bag deployment hazards and to point the trim cover away from your body when handling live air bag modules. Proper hand washing after deployment will eliminate sodium hydroxide residue from your skin. Do not probe into the air bag module connectors because deployment will occur. A new trim cover should replace any damaged or discolored trim cover of the air bag module. All uses of memory saver devices are strongly prohibited. Before starting your procedure disconnect power from the system and remove two plugs from the back cover of the steering wheel followed by unbolting the two driver air bag module retaining bolts before disconnecting the electrical connector to remove the module. Always maintain a straight wheel position before starting the steering wheel removal process. Begin by removing the retaining screws from the hood release handle to position it aside before removing the lower steering column opening finish panel by pulling its retaining screws and releasing the attached clips. Destroy the bolts that fasten the reinforcement panel to the lower steering column opening finish panel before you break free the four bolts linking the instrument panel to the steering column. This will allow upper steering column shroud removal. The removal of tilt wheel handle shanks should be performed on cars equipped with this feature. The ignition switch lock cylinder removal becomes possible after positioning it to RUN while pushing the release tab and pulling it outward and subsequent removal of the three screws from the lower steering column shroud. Start the process by taking out the upper steering column shroud and unscrewing the retaining screw of the PATS transmitter and the key-in-ignition warning indicator switch. You should disconnect the Clock Spring electrical connectors then unfasten the ground wire bolt before pulling out the Clock Spring by losing its retaining clips. The installation process requires removing the key from the lock cylinder when you position the rotor at the center point and prevent rotor movement. To recenter the device first stabilize the outer housing then free the rotor before applying a counterclockwise rotation until resistance occurs followed by a clockwise spin of three turns to achieve center placement. Connect the electrical connectors to the Clock Spring after you set it onto the steering column shaft while also attaching the lower retaining clip and installing-mounted retainer components and bolt for ground wire. Place the wire harness into its designated holders before you install the key-in-ignition warning indicator switch together with the PATS transmitter. Position the upper and lower steering column shrouds before installing their bolts into the instrument panel slot and installing the tilt wheel handle when needed. The lock cylinder for the ignition switch must receive proper installation with alignment to the OFF position. Secure finishes by attaching screws to the finish panel and its reinforcement while installing the wheel and finishing reinforcement panel of the lower steering column opening. The driver air bag module must be positioned next while its electrical connector is connected and retaining bolts secure it before replacing the steering wheel back cover plugs and reactivating the system.
