2005 Ford F-150 Timing Cover Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the engine front timing cover on 2005 Ford F-150?
A: The service process of the engine front cover begins with maintaining cleanliness to stop unwanted materials from entering either oil or coolant channels where failure might occur. The service includes draining engine oil while removing the coolant pump and camshaft synchronizer and crankshaft front seal before reinstalling the drain plug securely at 23 Nm (17 ft. lbs.). The procedure starts by taking out the oil filter together with the two bolts that secure the oil pan to the engine front cover. When taking out the concealed screw beside the oil pump housing handle it with care to protect the engine front cover from damage. After pulling off the engine front cover from its studs discard the gasket while recording the position of each distinctive stud for later reinstallment. When installing the coolant and oil passages utilize sealing methods to prevent contamination while you should wipe down sealing surfaces with silicone gasket remover and metal surface prep and a plastic scraping tool instead of metal scrapers or abrasive tools. The oil pan requires packing with shop towels followed by plugging the passages while cleaning away all debris with compressed air. Before installation apply thread sealant onto the studs and cap screw then install the engine front cover studs while tightening them to 7 Nm (62 inch lbs.). To ensure proper sealing the cover must be installed within four minutes for avoiding accidental touch-up and new sealant application to the sealing region. The engine front cover gasket installation should follow with silicone gasket and sealant application to the oil pan. Use the specified sequences to fasten all components while tightening the cap screw to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.) and other components to 28 Nm (21 ft. lbs.). Then install the coolant pump and gasket. After tightening the two bolts holding the oil pan to the engine front cover at 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.), install a new oil filter together with the crankshaft front seal and camshaft synchronizer. Next position the coolant pump pulley and fasten bolts to 10 Nm then add the A/C compressor and power steering pump pulley bracket brace with bolts at 48 Nm and the nuts tightened to 25 Nm. To complete the procedure you need to install the accessory drive belt followed by the cooling fan and fan shroud. Then proceed to fill the engine with clean oil and perform the cooling system fill-up and bleeding process.
